Singing Through Song - A guided journey into sustained vocal practice

A structured, supportive space to explore songs in depth — vocally, musically and artistically — before performance pressure enters the room.

This course focuses on the process of working with songs: understanding their material, meaning and vocal demands, and developing a personal, embodied relationship to them.

Over the 10 weeks, we’ll work with songs as living material. Rather than rushing towards performance, we’ll take time to explore what a song asks of your voice, your body and your imagination.

You will be supported in developing a grounded, embodied and expressive relationship with your repertoire, so that songs can be sung with greater ease, depth and personal truth.

Pre-registration is open now. You’ll receive booking details first when registration opens.

This course is for you if you:

  • have prior singing experience (choir, lessons, self-directed practice, semi-professional or professional work)
  • want to explore songs in depth over time (rather than just “getting through” repertoire)
  • want a clearer map of what your songs ask of your voice — range, rhythm, phrasing, style
  • want to deepen interpretation, storytelling and musical understanding
  • want to prepare material thoroughly before performance preparation begins
  • value embodiment, perception and listening as part of singing
  • enjoy working attentively in a small online group over a longer period of time

This course is not suitable for complete beginners or people looking for a one-off introduction to singing. It is not a drop-in class or a performance-focused format.

This course is designed for singers who already have some experience and are interested in sustained vocal development.

Across the 10 weeks we’ll focus on:

  • working with songs of your choice, allowing time to explore their challenges, possibilities and expressive potential

Songs are not genre-bound. You’re welcome to bring material from a wide range of contemporary music practices — such as pop, soul, R&B, funk, rock, singer-songwriter, musical theatre, jazz, blues, world music, electronic, dance — as well as original songs. We’ll work with the stylistic context of each song, using tools that translate across genres.

  • exploring melody, rhythm, range, phrasing and tone, and how stylistic context influences interpretation and vocal choices
  • understanding how a song sits in your voice and body
  • learning to make conscious stylistic decisions rather than relying on habit or guesswork
  • developing pitch and rhythmic clarity through attentive listening and song-based work
  • deepening interpretation, storytelling and meaning in song
  • connecting lyrics, sound and intention
  • creating a workable practice version of your songs (e.g. simple accompaniment or a backing track, plus a clear song map or chord-and-structure sheet you can reuse or share), so your voice can be the focus before adding complexity

No sheet music required — we’ll find a practical way for you to work with your songs.

  • cultivating vocal presence without forcing or performing

The focus is on process rather than performance, allowing your voice to develop in a grounded, organic way.

Sessions take place live via video call and combine:

  • functional, embodied vocal practice
  • attentive listening and perception
  • artistic exploration and interpretation
  • technical guidance rooted in vocal function
  • reflection and integration

Over 10 weeks we return to your chosen songs again and again — each time from a different angle: vocal demands, musical clarity, stylistic context, interpretation and embodied expression. The goal is to make the material reliable and truly yours — grounded in your voice, body and artistic intention — so it holds steady when the stakes rise.

Each session includes a short embodied warm-up, focused vocal practice, and song work in the group — including time for participants to bring in the songs they’re working on. We’ll usually explore one specific tool or angle each week, then apply it directly to your songs. Not everyone will sing each session, but everyone will be actively involved through listening, reflection and shared learning. You’ll receive clear guidance on what to practise between sessions, so your development continues week by week. You won’t be put on the spot. Everything is an invitation.

You will leave the course with:

  • a more grounded, reliable relationship with your voice
  • a deeper understanding of your vocal habits – and tools to shift them
  • increased confidence in working independently with songs
  • greater expressive range and interpretative clarity
  • tools for ongoing vocal practice beyond the course

Practical notes

  • A stable internet connection and a quiet space are recommended
  • Headphones can be helpful at times, but aren’t required
